SABINA
ABOUT
The Oldest Olive Groves in Europe
Olive oil from the ancient Sabine region is rich in history. Augustus’ agronomists selected this territory to plant thousands of trees and build mills and amphorae factories for the conservation, packaging and transportation of the oil, known as the ‘Gold of Rome.’ The olives were picked according to criteria that are still followed today, including the reading of weather cues, lunar phases and plant cycles. The Italian families that produce olive oil from these trees do it out of love, passion and tradition.
Sabine olive groves have been around since before Rome's existance. It was the home to several important people, including the second and third emperors of Rome, and is where St. Francis of Assisi began his spiritual journey. This region was the first in Europe to cultivate olive oil, and houses Europe's oldest and largest olive tree. When Rome took over, Sabine olive oil became known as the "Gold of Rome."
For the Sabine people, it wasn’t the structures or masterpieces that gave them their strength and longevity – instead it was their land that people relied on. A land that continues to give families today their well-being.
Libellula is designed both to establish a profitable solution to the dying practice of family cultivation of olive oil and to create a successful new business model that respects and protects the local countryside. Our Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) is produced following the strictest Sabina D.O.P. (Protected Designation of Origin) guidelines.
We are Rome. We offer a piece of Rome, and we provide our partners with the most sophisticated, and still undiscovered, history of Rome.
